EUROPA, BABY
I have a deep personal affection for Jupiter’s moons for reasons
I have an awkward relationship with Callisto. The other three all have a trait by which I can identify them: Europa is the iceball that might have oceans, Io is the volcanic hellworld, and Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system. But Callisto is just kind of… there. It’s literally the maverick, i.e., the one whose distinguishing characteristic is its absence of distinguishing characteristics.
Yeah, you probably don’t care about that. Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that Galileo named each of these moons after a mortal woman Zeus slept with? Modern astronomers have continued the trend with the other Jovian satellites.
